3.b.- 18th century military plans.

A considerable number of plans from the turn of the century and the early 17th were created in the context of the War of Succession which placed the Bourbon dynasty on the Spanish throne. This war, a direct result of the fact that Charles II was heirless, was a reflection on the battle for power than the leading European nations –France and Austria, especially– had been maintaining for the last decades of the 17th century. The loss of Spanish hegemony after the Treaty of the Pyrenees and the weakness of the monarchy with the last of the Spanish Austrias, turned its domains into something of a booty made up of leftovers disputed by different European states.

- The War of the League of Augsburg

Louis XIV’s natural border policy, according to his expansionary project, gave rise to constant confrontations with Spain during the reign of Charles II, the most important of which arose from the creation of the League of Augsburg, which particularly affected the Iberian Peninsula. In 1689, the countries of Europe, tired of the French king’s aggressiveness and belligerence, decided to form a coalition between the vast majority of the states of the old continent, which Spain was to join in the summer of 1690. This decision led Louis XIV to declare war on and invade Spain. Once again, Catalonia became the French army’s target after the brief period of peace that followed the French-Dutch war (1672-1678). This was unquestionably one of the most difficult situations experienced in Spain during the reign of Charles
