The overwhelming predominance of military content certainly has to do with the origin of the documents, but it can also be related to the period covered by the material. As we can see, military plans are predominant in the 17th century, whereas there is greater balance with civilian themes in the 18th; this is closely related to some of the questions we have mentioned in relation to cartographic production and publishing. The civilian maps that were so scarce in the 17th century, proliferated in the 18th due to the new administrative and political interests that arose within the context of enlightened governments.

3.a.- 17th century military plans.

The military cartography represents a perfect illustration of the great wars that directly affected the Iberian Peninsula during the 17th and 18th centuries: the Spanish-French war (1635-1659), the simultaneous uprisings of Catalonia and Portugal in 1640 and the War of Succession to the Spanish throne in the early 18th century. The plans are therefore the result of the need for military information that arose during these peninsular conflicts.
